Lent Day 37

Isaiah 50:6-9a

I gave my back to those who struck me and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand in court together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me.

It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

REFLECTION

Even when others insult, reject, or misunderstand you, you do not have to surrender your dignity. Strength is not always loud or aggressive; sometimes it is the quiet courage to endure without becoming bitter. When you “set your face like flint,” you choose resilience over reaction and purpose over pride. If your integrity is intact, no accusation can truly shame you. Stand firm, trust that truth stands near you, and let your character be your defense.

CONSIDER

When someone criticizes or hurts me, how do I usually respond and is that response helping me grow or holding me back?

PRAYER

When life feels heavy and I am challenged or misunderstood, help me remember what keeps me grounded. Anchor me in Your truth so that my strength comes not from pride, but from trust in You. When I am tempted to react in anger or discouragement, help me set my face like flint: steady, faithful, and unmoved from what is right. Remind me that You are near, that You are my defender, and that my identity is secure in You. Teach me to stand firm with courage, humility, and peace. Amen.

FAITH IN ACTION

When experiencing these frustrations:

  • Pause before responding if this is occurring in live time.

  • Identify or name, for yourself, exactly what you’re feeling so you can frame roots and reactions in relation to the issue at hand.

  • Separate yourself from criticism, as not every accusation defines you.

DAILY GRATITUDE

Take a moment to name one thing you are grateful for today.

BIBLE NOTE: Some prophetic passages are later understood as pointing toward Christ.
