Lent Day 36

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to abolish things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God.

In contrast, God is why you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord."

REFLECTION

God intentionally chooses those who seem weak, lowly, or insignificant by worldly standards to reveal divine wisdom and power. This shows that human status, strength, or intelligence are not what matter in God’s plan; instead, our worth comes from being in Christ, who embodies wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. Ultimately, the passage calls us to humility, reminding us that any boasting should be directed toward the Lord, not ourselves.

Reflection by Lisa

CONSIDER

How can I shift my perspective so that my boasting is in the Lord rather than in myself?

PRAYER

Lord, help me to embrace humility and trust in Your wisdom rather than my own. Remind me that my worth comes from Christ alone, and teach me to boast only in You. Amen.

FAITH IN ACTION

Look for opportunities to uplift someone who feels overlooked or undervalued. Encourage those who struggle with confidence, volunteering to help those in need, or simply listening to someone who feels unheard. By honoring and supporting those the world might consider “weak,” you live out God’s call to humility and grace.

DAILY GRATITUDE

Take a moment to name one thing you are grateful for today.

BIBLE NOTE: Contrast (“weak/strong,” “wise/foolish”) is a common teaching tool in Scripture.
