Lent Day 34
Mark 10: 13-16
People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
REFLECTION
And Jesus said, ”Let the little children come to me." The King James Bible version of this scripture reads, “Suffer the little children to come unto me.” I like the use of the word “Suffer” because we all know that even though little children are cute and adorable…they can also be a pain in the neck when you are trying to get something done. Little children question everything….Why?…Why?..Why? They want to explore, climb on, try and put everything in their mouths. Little children say no…No…NO!!! a lot….And they want to do what ever it is themselves! They are yearning to discover, understand and live in their world.
”Suffer the little children unto me and forbid them not: for as such is the Kingdom of GOD”
What I hear Jesus saying in this is people, young and old, are going to show up in your life asking WHY…questioning the Bible, church, religion, faith. Some are going to want to explore and taste differently the Holy Spirit, and they may even say NO a lot. Jesus is saying that, as annoying as they sometimes can be, these are the people you want to accept in your and the church’s life. In the questioning and exploration, together you will find, experience and taste the Kingdom of GOD in new powerful ways. Suffering these people unto you will help you find, know, and live even more fully in the Kingdom of GOD.
In the second part of the reading, “Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it,” I hear Jesus telling each of us to be one of those annoying children. Question, ask WHY???, explore, experience and taste the kingdom for yourself. Be curious, inquisitive, even if it’s annoying. Don’t take anyone’s word on it. Checkout, explore, experience, enter into the kingdom of God all around you and share what you have found with others so they can explore, experience and enter also.
In Short…. Invite and accept the sometimes annoying, questioning, seeker in others and in yourself. The Kingdom of God exists in the asking.
