Lent Day 4
Isaiah 58: 10
If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry, and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.
REFLECTION
My light shines when:
after helping stock the Blessings Pantry a young child runs out of the pantry excited and filled with joy, that she was going to have a snack to take to school the next day.
when the person on the street gives thanks and blesses me, imagine that, for the Brian’s Bag I shared with them.
when I was able to listen and share with a long-time friend that was struggling.
when the harried person at the grocery store takes a moment and smiles back at me.
when I see everyone before service on Sunday mornings.
when I am the lay leader or help with communion.
I feel that Christ’s light shines within me. I believe that my light is sustained by the light I share with others (no matter how small) and grows brighter, not by what I give, but by what is returned to me, kind of like Christmas Eve when we share the flame with one another. It really does feel good.

CONSIDER
I don’t know about you but every morning I can choose either the 1st 2 lines or the next 4 lines of the above Scripture. Oppressed, judgmental, and nasty, or behooving, satisfied, giving, filled with light and joy. Of course, I will choose the joy and light stuff over nasty and depressed, right? I have to share that there have been times when the negative wins for a bit. Sometimes when the self-centered, snappish, quick tempered, hurting, anxious human takes over. It’s dark there and, no, it doesn’t feel good.
PRAYER
Dear Lord, please help us learn to spend ourselves on behalf of the hungry and find time and opportunities to help satisfy the needs of the oppressed. It feels so wonderful when your light rises in the darkness, and your night becomes like the noonday. Help us feed the flame, feel the heat, share the love and joy. May it be so in everyone’s life. Amen.
FAITH IN ACTION
What do you choose?
