Lent Day 35
Isaiah 42:6-9
I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols
REFLECTION
Isaiah was a renown prophet and spiritual advisor to four kings of Israel who lived more than 700 years B.C., yet in the passages of Isaiah 42 refers to God’s asserting without question I am LORD (the omnipotent), and then proceeds, in God’s own words, to go into specific detail describing the Servant he has chosen to send to the people… One who is gentle, humble and filled with the Spirit, one God selected and in whom God delights, who will bring justice through tender mercy and will be a covenant and a light for the nations and all people. This passage has since been revered as God’s clear foretelling of the coming of Jesus Christ, and these verses (6-9) are delivered as a personal direction and charge from God to Jesus for his life’s service and ministry. It is truly stunning and inspiring how well the words describe what is to come as a gift from God to all people. Praise the Lord!
Personal reflection from Karl: I found it particularly interesting that this passage immediately follows the verses that I had just read from the lectern in our church service a few Sundays back… I didn’t expect to receive such a gift to ponder, but God’s word certainly made me smile.
