Lent Day 38
John 13:14-17, 33-35
So, if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Very truly, I tell you, slaves are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
REFLECTION
While Jesus walked the earth, he lived as a visible, tangible example of how we are called to live and how we are called to treat others. Being exactly like Jesus is impossible—but we are still called to try.
On this night, Jesus takes the place of a servant and washes the feet of everyone at the table—even Judas. In doing so, he shows us that love is not reserved for those who agree with us, think like us, or look like us. Jesus calls us to love those who are different, those we disagree with, and even those who may cause us harm.
This kind of love is not easy. It is humbling. It is risky. And it is deeply countercultural. Yet Jesus tells us that this is how the world will recognize his disciples—not by our words alone, but by our love and compassion for all.
Reflection by Ashley
CONSIDER If Jesus were living in my place and time, how would he respond to those whom society labels as “unlovable”?
PRAYER Compassionate God, Love is not always my first response. Thank you for giving me another chance to get it right. Guide my heart, that I may show your love to all people. Amen.
FAITH IN ACTION Lead with love. Be an example by showing compassion to someone whom society tells you is unlovable.
DAILY GRATITUDE
Take a moment to name one thing you are grateful for today.
BIBLE NOTE: In John’s Gospel, Jesus often teaches through actions as well as words.
