Lent Day 27

Romans 8:6-9

To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

For this reason, the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law-- indeed, it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

REFLECTION

I believe the message is very clear in this reading because earthly beings of flesh do not continue and eventually everything "withers away on the vine" and dies.  The mind that is set on flesh is hostile to God because it is short sighted with no good outcome.  Those people who are preoccupied with the "here and now" beauty, possessions and accumulating wealth in material things are not able to look beyond for the truth and spiritual meaning of God's word.  For those who are"not in the flesh", it is easier to follow the path of spirituality, kindness, helping the unfortunate and being open and fair minded.  Those people will inherit the kingdom of the Lord and have everlasting life.

CONSIDER

How do we as human beings balance our lives so that we function well in society, lead productive good lives, make money to care for ourselves and our families but also have time to reflect on the word of God, putting in action -taking time to help others and set aside space for our Christian (or other faith) values and spiritual growth?

PRAYER

Dear Lord, I pray that you help us to find inner peace, to balance our lives in a meaningful way, to help others while we help ourselves, to "do onto others as we would have them do onto us".   We are seeking your truth, inner peace and a less hostile, troubled world and want to do our part to make this earthly life a better place for everyone.

FAITH IN ACTION

I believe that by going to God's house (Church, Mosque, Synagogue or Temple) it is important for people of faith who are trying to follow the word and the truth.  By volunteering for community service, being generous when we can, helping others or supporting non-profit organizations.  If we are accepting, caring, open minded people and continue life long learning, we are on our way to leading a better life and following Jesus' example.  This will enhance our life and hopefully others in return.

DAILY GRATITUDE

Take a moment to name one thing you are grateful for today.

BIBLE NOTE: Paul often builds ideas step by step, contrasting two ways of living.
